I think our Singapore Tourism Board now have another piece of publicity material to use when selling Singapore to would-be tourists.

Reuters: Anime figurine protesters meet real police

Mr Brown: Singapore police sends 4 riot buses to deal with Ultraman?

Welcome to the first country in the world where riot police were on standby to arrest figurines. Uniquely Singapore, indeed.

I did see this piece of news and I thought that it was just satire.

But that was before I saw that Reuters article.

    Michael,

I honestly wish it was satire. I have no idea how to respond if foreigners come up to me in future and ask me about it. It’s embarrassing.

Using excessive force to handle such minor incident does not reflect very well on the current leadership.

The person in charge of Singapore does not feel very secure and comfortable in his current positions even those he has vast power to do what he think fit in Singapore context.

    And we were ‘efficient!’
    Sure as hell.

it’s all about readiness and the duty of a police personnel to follow orders (and keep a straight face). after all, the ISD and the irrational fears of singaporeans have done such a good job over the decades that there isn’t much opportunity for the force to show their strength.

in fact, in a non-violent protest, it is up to the police to protect the protesters, not cordorn them off, because it’s your constitutional right to express your ideas. unfortunately, this constitution has been strapped with many iron chastity belts of regulations that discourage gatherings to peacefully assemble and demonstrate, in the process discourage people from exerting their right, in the process making people forget they even have this right.

i won’t be surprised if there’ll be a new regulation being drafted to encompass/extend toward the use of proxies in public assembly/protest, for example if everyone made their dogs wear a t-shirt containing a political slogan, and simultaneously walk their dogs at a specific public location. maybe the riot squad will be mobilised, and baton-smack your dog if it barks too loud, and the ISD will detain your dog without trial.

well, few things we must understand. the toy protest COULD HAVE incited people to harbour hatred and violent tendencies, so if you’re the government, you’ll leave nothing to chance. for example, what if the toys had anti-religious slogans on them? the police may be building a sandcastle with a bulldozer, but they probably did it in case there was a violent reaction from the public. who knows if there are gangs and posses of IPR/copyright-advocates who’ll physically attack the protestors. in any sense, the police was also there to “ensure” the safety of the protestors and their toys, no matter how much you’ll want to laugh at this logic.

    don’t you just love singapore?

Why protest when you can write a complaint letter to the Straits Times forum?…It is a waste of time! …These young people should be nursing their feelings of injustice the same way adult Singaporeans do by staying at home to watch TV or go out shopping. They should be taught that protesting in Singapore is a total waste of time and is a dangerous activity because they can potentially get violent due to their primtive repressed feeling of anger…that is why 4 riot police have showed up.

If you’re unhappy about something, you can always meet your MP. He is paid $14000 a month for his part time work to listen to you once a week. He will make an effort to explain to you why you shouldn’t be unhappy so please let him help you to understand.

They are practising what to do when there is a freak election. They are also afraid that the Ultraman will transform to the real thing and start to attack the “evil monsters in the towers”.

Just chanced upon this news today. The mere show of force by the riot police is hilarious and has potentially inflicted psychological considerations into our youthful minds.

An irony indeed about the youth park’s slogan. Instead of feeling space and filling space. The filling presence of riot police, effectively reduces space for youthful expressions and feelings.

Historical incidents aside, it’s much easier to disperse riots (action figurines or otherwise) in Singapore these days, than to have one in the first place. Best Regards

Aiyoh, Uncle Yaw never study philosophy one.

Because you cannot riot, so you join the riot police then you can also do mass-mass thing mah…

well… i see it as a case of bored law enforcers…
since there has not been anything major happening the local world…

riots, how ever small scale seems to the thing that lets them out for a little exercise. after all, without the exercise, how can they run and chase down ‘bigger’ criminals?

then again, the odex issue did earn a big zoom in all major anime fan sites… and hey.. looking on the bright side, Singapore is just a small red dot… our dot just got a little bigger in the media…
