Singapore’s pay TV scene a free market?
It looks like the MDA is not going to intervene in football pay TV issue, claiming that free market is the way to go.
Well, I’m not sure what is MDA’s idea of a free market. As it stands now, whoever gets the exclusive rights to show matches from a particular football league basically becomes a monopoly until the rights expire. I’m no economist but my understand of a free market is that buyers are not coerced in any manner by sellers and what is happening now doesn’t seem like a free market to me but well, I could be wrong.
Well, if you don’t want to pay the high prices, TVU is a possible alternative.

Free market means that when prices go up, the tax collection also goes up because of 7% GST. That means garmen can collect more money and therefore ministers and senior civil servants bonuses at the end of the year will be higher lah. Right or not?

and I guess free market also mean the pay tv station paid too much for the rights, no one subscribes and the tv station fails. if the tv station continues to thrive, then the station was spot on!!

TVU is also a wonderful alternative when the games of the team you support (IE NOT A TEAM FROM THE ‘BIG FOUR’) are not televised.

With the restriction of content exclusivity, it will never be a free market…
A true free market is allowing all the incumbents to offer the same content and compete on how they repackage the content to consumers…
There is no innovation here because the incumbents are so well protected and if you look behind the scene, you will probably know why by asking who is the ultimate shareholder and stands to gain most from this “competition”!
