The significance of National Day celebrations
Once again, it’s that time of the year again to celebrate our nation’s independence since 1965. Held at Marina Bay this year, the celebrations this year is being billed by the mass media as being the best ever. It’s probably the most expensive ever too, considering that it was probably not cheap to construct that “floating” gallery.
I always wonder if the amount of expenditure on such a lavish celebration every year makes any sense. The money can probably be better spent elsewhere but I suppose it is necessary to spend this money simply because human beings appear to have an innate need for rituals. Well, whether we Singaporeans need the annual ritual of National Day celebrations is not so clear but our leaders clearly think that it’s necessary.
From a sociological perspective, rituals are important to the proper functioning of a society because they serve the social function of expressing and reinforcing certain shared values and beliefs. In the case of Singapore, National Day celebrations is never without a display of some of our military prowess, ostensibly to send a message to both Singaporeans and neighbouring countries that Singapore is more than capable of defending herself.
For the conspiracy theorist, there might be a more sinister side to National Day celebrations. The amount of euphoria generated as a result of every celebration temporarily suppresses the unhappy feelings of social groups left out of Singapore’s rapid economic development. After all, during National Day celebrations, certain keywords like equality and unity keeps getting replayed, intoxicating the average Ah Kow. When Ah Kow finally wakes up months later, the next National Day hype is invoked again.
Maybe I shouldn’t read too much into the meaning of National Day celebrations. After all, many people are happy with getting to watch fireworks and spectacular aerial displays by the Air Force. And of course, the government is happy to send us the annual reminder on how we were kicked out of Malaysia but under the eminent leadership of MM Lee, we overcame the odds to become a first world nation with a third world backyard.

Hmm, I never really thought about NDP in this way. It’s a tad over-cynical, but some of the points do make sense.
Personally, I think National Days are indeed important days for any country, and the celebration should be grand. The military displays are also because it’s always the SAF who organises the NDP, so I guess they will surely want to give themselves lots of air-time?
With regards to the last point, I see nothing wrong with having the reminder. MM Lee did do an amazing job making Singapore what it is today, although it was not without its collateral damage and sacrifices. But hey, it could have been much, much worse.
Anyhow, just enjoy National Day dude! It’s a public holiday, no matter how you look at it

I attended my polytechnic’s celebrations yesterday. Left halfway because I couldn’t stand the noise any longer.
Lots of food for thought about propaganda. You are right that NDP propaganda “temporarily suppresses” dissatisfaction in the population, because propaganda, is by nature, intended to show only the nice stuff about Singapore. Any complaints about pay hikes are forgotten among catchy songs and impressive parades.
What I can’t stand is that the screaming crowds at the celebrations just suck up all the propaganda without thinking.
Ideally, propaganda would be unnecessary. A good government should be judged only on its actions, and propaganda gets in the way of an objective assessment it.

National Day is the day to show that our defense budget is well spent…
where we celebrate our transition to a globalised city of possiblities and a day we can get together to celebrate the grand achievements of our leaders and appreciate their efforts to bring greater success to this nation.
In my national day message, I will discussing ownership. Do people feel they own this place or are just employees of Singapore Inc and National Day is Singapore Inc day ….

We want to celebrate as a nation but by the look of it (years after years), the day is to celebrate the existence of the party. If you observe very very carefully, the audience wear whatever they liked (mostly red, color of the nation). But the party members wear their PARTY signature attires and not colours of the occassion. Now, that’s what we called PARTY UNITY, while we are supposed to celebrate our NATIONAL UNITY. Remind me of KJI style of massive display of leadership affection. Well, happy ND everybody, whatever it means nowadays.

Yee Hung,
I’m not being cynical la. As jdtoh pointed out, I’m just being critical. Actually, I am not exactly being critical but rather, I want to provide another direction to think about National Day from a sociological perspective (to to use a more cheem term, deconstruct). It’s a mind/academic exercise more than anything else.

This year could be different. The significance of National Day celebrations this year might just mark a milestone of more radicial price hike in many thing to come. First, PAP give, later they take back with interest .

Dear Sir & Madam,
My name is Lee Yoke Mui. I am from Seremban, Malaysia, currently studying in UTM. I have been trying very hard to make direct contact with one of your Singaporean bloggers who goes by the name of Darkness. A small group of us here in Malaysia would like to interview him or consider going over to your great Republic to do an interview. We have been trying very hard to make contact. Sometimes leaving ten or twenty messages a day, but to no avail. Recently I believe they have moved out of the Intelligent Singaporean. We dont know where to start looking for them. Can anyone please recommend me to an internet central repository or someone who knows it well enough to give us advise. Pls kindly post the details here. Terima Kasih & Happy National Day Singapura. LYM.

Its about time to learn to unlearn. Being fed with fast foods,
fast money, fast promotion, fast propaganda, fast everything,
the mind simply becomes muddled up and clogged to the extent
that one simply cannot see the difference between black and
white, or red and white, or whatever colors. Many shades
of Grey have been thrown at us like beautiful flowers showering
the dead before putting them into the grave.
While celebrating Singapore’s Independence Day, do not forget
to celebrate your own Independence Day. Its time to unlearn.
Its time to wake up from the euphoria of past glories before it
is too late. Happy National Day to those who are really Happy.

Hmm… Perhaps before we think about any hidden significance of National Day, we should think whether Singapore is a “nation” in the first place? And, on that note, maybe we ought to think about what we mean by “nation”?
That aside, if I’m not wrong, once, during a career talk, I heard this guy from MINDEF saying that there is a department within MINDEF which think about & decide what military equipment Singapore can show to the world (in TV shows, NDP & overseas training). So I am in agreement that the military showcase during each NDP is not only to reassure Singaporeans but also to show to the outside world that Singapore is no pushover…

I appreciate what the old man and his merry men have done for us. But I can never accept the argument that it could have been worst or will be worst. Hey, we could have been much better, with well thought our population, housing, welfare and retirement planning. The only way does not simply mean the best way, the lack of critical assessment or challenge might have killed many a brilliant or better idea which would have benefited the population more. For example if the CPF was better utilised with better returns we would not be facing the present situation now. It might have been a only solution then and a good one but it has failed the test of time. Many a suggestion which are being considered now were short down due to the monoploy of the decision making process.
It does not mean that if something is repeated often enough, it becomes are universal truth. That Singapore would not have faired much better under the leadership of someone else or other political setup is nothing but a universal untruth being held as the absolute truth.

Pls get up to speed on the whole issue. I dont think, it is right for me to take sides on this issue, so you look and decide for yourself.

I always wonder if the amount of expenditure on such a lavish celebration every year makes any sense.
Actually hor, MM said the same thing in a recent interview (saw podcast at STOnline a couple of days ago). He said that the money spent could be used to build a couple of community centres. Apparently, he had advisors who told him that’s what the people want (!?!?).
Happy National Day.

KTM,
That is an interesting comment coming from MM Lee himself. I suppose for any NDP, there has to be a certain level of festivity but I seriously wonder if we are over-doing it. I don’t think the scale and grandeur of our NDP will lose to North Korea.

Lee Yoke Mui, meet darkness ?
You must be joking. Why do you think he called himself darkness ? He rather stay in the dark penning articles anonymously than meet people in the light to be used by people politically.
It’s better that Darkness stay this way lest that name has to be changed.
Some of the articles Darkness write is controversial and expose many so-called elite people, and exposing him is as good as asking elite to harm him.
So leave him and his army of darkness alone if we to continue to see the light.

For what I know about Darkness from some blog, he is prestigious person who travel extensively, experience more things than us, see the truth more than we see fallacy, and people hold him in high respect to protect him at all cost.
Hello,
(1)”You must be joking. Why do you think he called himself darkness ? He rather stay in the dark penning articles anonymously than meet people in the light to be used by people politically.”
Sorry, but I have personally met darkness on at least 3 occasions and so have many of the regular brotherhood readers. I didnt interact with him personally, but from what I observed he didnt come across as an exceptional person. He was well dressed, clean cut and looked just an ordinary guy, a bit quiet, not the talkative type, very polite and well mannered. I did remember he had a falcon like quality about him, very sharp and quick off the mark that endeared him to many of his female readers, but nothing special really. Or maybe I am just biased. Dunno, but that was how he came across to me. The rest were more talkative and more showy, but he seemed to be the direct opposite. You could say even distant and unapproachable. I sensed, I was dealing with a very complex and deep personality.
(2)”Darkness write is controversial and expose many so-called elite people, and exposing him is as good as asking elite to harm him.”
Hahahahaha “elites to harm him” I sincerely doubt it sir, you see its quite simple. The majority of brotherhood supporters are “elites” themselves. if you dont believe me just join one of their regular “get to know” sessions. I would say 99% of them are hardly your average man on the street. That I believe has always been a problem with the brotherhood. They’re top heavy. You would be hard pressed to get a single “elite” stand up against them publicly. They would disagree with him, but only in private. What many fail to recognize is the “elites” who regularly form the brotherhood readership exercise so much control and influence over the editorial because many of them are infact de facto writers who contribute indirectly to the brotherhood press. This is the part many of us dont regularly see, but if you take a look at their articles, its really a patch work of views sticthed together from many of their online discussions. It could even be safely said, the brotherhood press can never write anything about this erudite class because so much of their writing material emerges directly from them.
They are in a catch 22 situation, if they try to go mainstream, they will lose their core readers cum contributors. If they compromise they lose both of them. I suspect they dont really know what to do about this, only because the elites form the core of the brotherhood themselves. This could be why, they have such a strained relationship with even their core readers. But rest assured, the influence they weild over the “elites” and especially the scholar community is very real.
(3)”experience more things than us, see the truth more than we see fallacy”
Personally, I dont think much of darkness the online gaming character. I have too many gripes on this area to cite and many will probably be damaging, but let us say my hope is one day, he will be able to step out from darkness into the light.
I personally have alot of respect for not only darkness but the rest of the brotherhood as well. Where I part waves with them is how they regularly fail to connect with their wider readership and instead only molly cuddle their core readers. This I believe will work against them in the long run.
What of their recent fiasco with Singapore Angle. I for one consider this a form of madness that only one man and one alone can possibly pull off and we dont need to mention his name do we.

“What of their recent fiasco with Singapore Angle. I for one consider this a form of madness that only one man and one alone can possibly pull off and we dont need to mention his name do we.”
What of it? You notice something, they dont even care whether they are or are not mentioned any more. They have already come to accept it, they will be invisible, that means they will draw their own lines, define their own borders and even set their own goals without even consulting the rest of us.
That’s very dangerous, very dangerous indeed.
I do not believe either the people in Singapore Angle or even the Intelligent Singaporean understand fully what the brotherhood means by the term “war.”
If they did the IS would kick them out.
Soothy,
To me the matter can be easily resolved. Its a very simple question: Why wasnt the brotherhood press mentioned?
in the http://www.singaporeangle.com/2007/07/introduction_to_singapore_soci.html
Till todate Singapore Angle has remained silent. Bambi should go for the throat, write about the matter .
What is he waiting for? Everyone can see reasonable time has passed? The grace period is over. You strike down, no one will say a thing.
As it is no one even wants to get involved in this matter, so what is he waiting for.
What I want to know is simply this. How the hell did the panels in SA not notice something was missing when IS was mentioned? Actually what is their function, if it is not to ensure accuracy? Is it possible to mention the IS without seeing the brotherhood press? Because I notice in the vid, they even had the IS page up there for a good 30 secs, so what are you telling me, no one notice the brotherhood press! This also shows how useless the webmaster in the IS really is. I think he should bear 50% of the blame. I mean if I was in a partnership and someone threw a party on my behalf as a matter of common courtesy, I will still raise my glass to my partner. But in this case as we can all see kosong lah. that could be why the brotherhood pulled out their mascot HAL and now they have even put an end to all forum discussions.
Slowly they are showing those around them, if you do not know how to behave, I will teach you and you will learn.

This matter could have been easily resolved- but what really saddens me is, it will not go away. That’s the sickening thing about Bambi bad boy, it never ever just goes away.
I really dont blame them. It happened too many times. Everytime the IS is mentioned they were systematically marginalized. It reached a point when it all exploded to this point. Now it is simple, as darkness said I will come, see and conquer.
The question will never ever go away: Why wasnt the brotherhood press mentioned in the

I agree, out all your hurt and feelings into what you want to say about either BL, Kevin or the Singapore Angle, forget the legal implications. We will deal with that later, if it comes, it comes, the brotherhood is seasoned like old leather by now!
Put it all down into words Bambi, never keep it in your heart like the matter concerning the church, where it slowly eats you up, turning all of you into embittered and angry people.
Enough time has been given. No one will say a thing. They would even go through the act of pretending, they saw or heard nothing.
At least history will be your witness – write darkness and entomb your anger forever.

Hammer the IS as well. It matters little. There is no love loss, but bury it and move on. That was the thing you people didnt do with the church and the cost today is so prohibitively high. I cannot even begin to tell you how many ppl are directly and indirectly affected by all this this.
State your case, make it crystal clear, shout obscenities if you must, do what needs to be done. The move on.

You will all forgive me for what I have to say. From today onwards, there will be a new order.
You will never speak as if, we do exist, if you do. I will produce the statistics and facts to rubbish what you say. I will do it! I will even go as far as to confront your editors and throw how ever much money needs to thrown.
Do you understand, if I see another post against, I will slap you and that will be that. Forgive me again but that is how it will have to be from now onwards.
Our days of generalization is over. It is finished, if you saY x is X, I will challenge it publicly. If you say this is Y is Y, I will prove it is Y plus something else, so it is best, if you reporters dont commit yourself factually, speak in general terms, but do shy away from specifics, because I will be around.
If you do the response will be sharp, short and shocking.
As for BL and Kevin and singapore angle their back patting days are over. I will stop here for now, In the name of peace, but do it one more time and I come down on you. I swear to God!
I did not wish for this war, it was brought to me. All I did was mind my own business. Even then you mother fuckers couldnt leave me and my boys alone.Till today those mother fuckers in Singapore angle havent even given me one single reason why we were not mentioned in their great blogosphere review. Not even one!
So you decide for yourself. I leave it to you.
I want to be a patient man. You have no idea how much I want to be that man. I want to be reasonable, but I ask myself, why do you mothers make it so doubly hard for me?
Forgive me again.
I will stop here for now only because I shown you all what we can do and how a I can make such a fool of myself, but remember no more.
No more means no more. Or I will be back again.
I am darkness, the man half the virtual world calls el diablo, it is a reputation that you have no idea how much it shames me to be even associated with it.

Dear Brotherhood Readers,
I knew darkness would self destruct. Deep inside, I just knew. For a while when they were just writing after that review incident, I said to myself, maybe he has let it all go, but I have read every single one of his internet novels. I probably even know him better than himself. I just knew deep in my heart of hearts this would happen.
I remember this from the confessions:
http://intelligentsingaporean.wordpress.com/2005/02/19/the-confessions-of-a-singaporean-gangster-in-london-chapter-25-%e2%80%9cthe-cigar-box-the-forger-once-gave-me%e2%80%9d/
The man who couldn’t run away from himself. Maybe he was describing himself more than the character himself.
The brotherhood have started to close down their SLF’s one by one, indiscriminately, they have started to re-arrange their communications. This only means one thing – this is probably the last message from the Geniue line. After this there will be no more.
I feel very sad. I knew it would always end up this way, he had to sabotage himself. It’s always like that wherever they go. I dont blame the SA, BL or even darkness. I just feel so sad that it has all come to an end.
Good bye all and God bless

You know what I think is really morally reprehensible? When a site master of the Singapre Angle has to go through the whole trouble of gutting out large chunks of dialogue simply because darkness asked very valid and pointed questions. The very fact they (SA) have to resort to deliberate alteration and glossing o over illustrates too clearly how inadequate and inept their position was in the first instance and secondly how indefensible it was to the case in question. When it comes to answering a very simple question that darkness asked:
Why wasn’t the brotherhood press mentioned in the blogosphere review?
The very fact that they have to resorted to this dastardly and underhand tactic is clear for all to see and one simply has to ask why? I am sure they can manufacture a variety of reasons to suit their means, but when a site claims to be a paragon of rational discourse and yet resorts to sort of banana republic tactic it shows only too clearly how morally and idealistically bankrupt they are. Firstly, they dont even have the confidence to allow the facts to speak for themselves to you the audience without resorting to censoring and coloring. Secondly they propose to alter the events by representing in a manner which only suits their purpose to validate their position.
As observer has noted correctly, (the chronicler) took the trouble to preserve the original thread only because we expected this much from the Singapore Angle.
If none of you believe they gutted it out to suit their own purpose just go and visit and see for yourself:
http://www.singaporeangle.com/2007/07/introduction_to_singapore
Incidentally this is the same site the claims to promote rational and fair discourse and even makes it a point to be regularly featured in the MSM.
I did not support darkness on this whole matter. I stood to one side quietly hoping to persuade him in my manner in my own time, but having seen this first hand, I believe, he was right – he saw right through the shit hole that it simply is.

My dear readers,
The time has come when we will have to say part again – I have left a note with Aaron, it’s a discourse in our Parliament why this must be, it’s hardly my choice – was I right to pursue the case? Maybe not, but it felt too right to put down without at least a fight.
Recently, I wrote another internet book, it’s entitled ‘the tree that binds,’ one that was inspired after watching a Korean series during a trip to Japan – like all my books its written during the filler moments when usually I spend waiting in airports and train stations – a story of quiet thoughts of two people in love in the shortest of breathes, touched ever so lightly like birds nesting in each other’s warmth, hardly a care for tomorrow. You will know them by their laughter but to each other they speak mostly through their silence and tears of hope, if they find themselves apart, they may dream perhaps of yellow fitches and sweet repose on a summers evening. If they dream of sitting undisturbed in each other’s presence, its only because that’s all the have, the moment wrapped warmly in each other’s warmth – a familiar balm reminding them having too little can be denial. Having too much may mean not even savoring life – so let us be content, let us smile, hold my hand and look at me just once – I put all my heart into the characters into this novel like a man standing on a ship looking out at the frothy wake to see where it shall take me with hardly a care – little did I realize, it was to you and away and for this I am sorry – there are no farewells only god speed like the one’s we once shared when we awaken so suddenly knowing dawn is just around the corner, yet its nice and comfy isn’t it – it’s a new day still lies asleep and the quiet seepages lay still fast asleep – meanwhile let me leave you with an excerpt of what little inspired me to write this new novel just for you and one day even if we walk away let us dream of vanilla skies.

bullshit. IS also censored my comments. And IS censored the comments of fellow BP members to present a united front. Anyway, I am glad – cos the council of the wise says everyrthing was ok, move on, and I heard somone whining on and on thereafter.

Dear all,
Well done the Singapore Angle Team, Mr Bernard Leong and Mr Kevin Lim, you actually nailed them and this time – their Council of the Wise has come down so hard on Darkness & Co, they have been blown apart into dust – great work!
All he asked was this question:
“Darkness Says:

http://intelligentsingaporean.wordpress.com/2007/07/17/intro-to-singapores-socio-political-blogosphere/
HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE TO MISS OUT THE BROTHERHOOD PRESS?
BECAUSE I CANNOT UNDERSTAND, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME, PERHAPS A JOURNALIST, A BLOGGER OR EVEN A READER.
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE MISSED US OUT BC I AM CERTAINLY NOT EVEN GETTING A SIMPLE ANSWER FROM THE PEOPLE WHO RUN SINGAPORE ANGLE OR EVEN MR BERNARD LEONG OR KEVIN LIM.
SO CAN SOMEONE PLS EXPLAIN TO ME?
Darkness 2007″
But bear this always in mind even when darkness asked this question, even the likes of harphoon, scholar boy and astro boy, all realized they had more or less inadvertently sealed their fates by openly defying the council of the wise.
Its as good as pushing the the self destruct button, that sets off the program that’s supposed to destroy a star ship, it’s irreversible, only they are no escape pods this time. And every single one of them knew they were as good as finished from that moment onwards.
Maybe its true darkness is a self destructive character, it had to happen. If it wasn’t this incident. Another would do just as well, but this nailed them dead and its a first. I have been following darkness & co for years, nothing beats them, nothing means nothing except this – they are as good as finished for the better part of their cyber life time.
Whatever this may or may not bring, as a long time reader on the brotherhood press posting on their first SLF line known as the Wanhai account which first started in Hong Kong in 2002 – I feel sad, because to me, they have been such a large part of my life and the way they all went was such a waste.
It could have been solved by a simple, “I am sorry.” Instead it took a turn for the worse and now it was even led to this, what are we left with now? I really dont know, in a few weeks, it will all the forgotten and life will just go on as it always has, but as I look out this morning, it seems darker today.
Have no doubts. I feel that as a long term reader. I owe Harphoon and the rest a duty to set the record right – the killed themselves off by asking the question that the Council told them not to ask – it was suicide.
Good Wishes

To The Brotherhood,
I am really shocked that you guys have decided to go. I really enjoyed all your articles, tediously researched, professionally and intellectually analysed and beautifully written, especially those of darkness’s and recently aurora’s.
I will really miss all of you guys. Please give me an honour of keeping in contact by dropping a line at my blog at:
http://www.sitis.wordpress.com
which was purposely set up for sharing my thoughts in response to what have been written by the Brotherhood.
I would not want to say goodbye, as I can’t bear the thought of saying goodbye. You guys will still be around. You have to. You must.
Therefore, I shall always remain yours in faith and in trust:
AS IT IS!

My afternoon my friends,
We dont need deep psychology to know what is happening here and even less of Freud or any complex theory to make sense of why they felt so hurt as to even behave so irrationally.
I realized this when I saw this video cast, the IS was mentioned but not a single word about the BP. Enough said.
http://intelligentsingaporean.wordpress.com/2007/07/17/intro-to-singapores-socio-political-blogosphere/
And I ask myself, is it really possible to log into the IS without seeing the BP? I really leave that to you.
So let us all not complicate things, because this time they are gone for good. All this is now academic, but why did darkness still do the things he did when he realized the council will eventually banish him as they have done?
I asked my brother who once played their RPG and he said that is the way of the brotherhood. They are nomadic people, so when they do something it’s not so much about them as the next person who is going to come along and walk the same path. That is why he said, Nomadic plant trees on Oasis for it to provide shade for others. The same reason why they warn travellers of dangers by writing on stones, it is never about them per se. He went on to say this is something city people will never ever understand, that is why they just know how to take, take and take.
They did it all for the next group who will come after them so that they will not have to suffer like them.
How different can they really be from us? We are all human beings and if we pain, we cry. If you cut us, we bleed the same, so when the Singapore Angle and even the Intelligent Singaporean treated them as if they didnt even once exist – what did they really expect?
The irony of it all now is of course this:
http://intelligentsingaporean.wordpress.com/2007/07/17/intro-to-singapores-socio-political-blogosphere/
Watching it all again NOW, it could be said both Bernard Leong, Kevin Lim and the Singapore Angle are indeed perfectly right, the brotherhood never existed in the Singapore blogosphere.
They were simply a figment of our imagination.
Go in peace boys and my God bless you all.
Rina
