The significance of National Day celebrations
Once again, it’s that time of the year again to celebrate our nation’s independence since 1965. Held at Marina Bay this year, the celebrations this year is being billed by the mass media as being the best ever. It’s probably the most expensive ever too, considering that it was probably not cheap to construct that “floating” gallery.
I always wonder if the amount of expenditure on such a lavish celebration every year makes any sense. The money can probably be better spent elsewhere but I suppose it is necessary to spend this money simply because human beings appear to have an innate need for rituals. Well, whether we Singaporeans need the annual ritual of National Day celebrations is not so clear but our leaders clearly think that it’s necessary.
From a sociological perspective, rituals are important to the proper functioning of a society because they serve the social function of expressing and reinforcing certain shared values and beliefs. In the case of Singapore, National Day celebrations is never without a display of some of our military prowess, ostensibly to send a message to both Singaporeans and neighbouring countries that Singapore is more than capable of defending herself.
For the conspiracy theorist, there might be a more sinister side to National Day celebrations. The amount of euphoria generated as a result of every celebration temporarily suppresses the unhappy feelings of social groups left out of Singapore’s rapid economic development. After all, during National Day celebrations, certain keywords like equality and unity keeps getting replayed, intoxicating the average Ah Kow. When Ah Kow finally wakes up months later, the next National Day hype is invoked again.
Maybe I shouldn’t read too much into the meaning of National Day celebrations. After all, many people are happy with getting to watch fireworks and spectacular aerial displays by the Air Force. And of course, the government is happy to send us the annual reminder on how we were kicked out of Malaysia but under the eminent leadership of MM Lee, we overcame the odds to become a first world nation with a third world backyard.

This is the last comment from SLF 5 / aka Wanchai line which was started personally by darkness the in July 2003 – Hong Kong / icered.com. We have been instructed to shut down by unspecified sources claiming to be simply acting “by order of the council.”
I can only assume, it has something to do with this:

thanks for the update.
I hope Inspir3d will continue his great work at intelligent singaporean. I agree with him, it was originally aimed at creating a great platform for discussing social issues, but it went into a Brotherhood press forum pages which was really distracting. I pay my deep respect to Inspir3d and all who worked hard on Intelligent Singaporean. I hope that unlike Kitana and Gayle, IS will make a comeback.

At first it sounded cryptic and melodramatic, that he should have described his position in such fatal terms. I didn’t think much about it at the time, but after what has happened recently, I realized he wasn’t referring to me but maybe he was just thinking aloud as he often does reminiscing about his on-going dispute with his bosses the Council. Bambi is a smart boy, he must have realized it was finished even then.
I realized he is a gentleman and maybe he was trying to tell me in not so many words, you don’t have to fight me, I am already finished. It took me a while to realize it, I wasn’t dealing with an ordinary man, but even one you had a poetic sense of right and wrong.

SA has lost all its credibility as far as I am concerned, by deleting what they shouldn’t have. What they did betrayed their hidden motives. Now they are no different from the MSM.

It is so funny that the Brotherhood blames SA for their own misdeeds. If they claim that they are so almighty, they don’t need to be begging for acknowledgement and attention and spam till people have to delete their garbage off. Worse, they got a bunch of idiots who keep harping about how good the brotherhood is.
The Brotherhood is the most stupid group of idiots I see in cyberspace. They keep telling people that their history is eradicated and they are almighty. Is there a contradiction there?

And as someone so rightly framed it, “On Record,” the Singapore Angle didn’t even bother to reply him. Instead they resorted to back tracking – deleting whole chunks of the thread, including one from my read group, a lady by the name of Tracy, along with every other post that even questioned the whole premise of the issue.
Today if one activates any of the links it shows paints only one picture: darkness is represented as a deranged man and if that is not character assasination of the highest order please go ahead and sue me, because I am openly issuing you a challenge before everyone here that I am prepared to even go to court on this matter to clarify this matter. As far as I am concerned the people who run the Singapore Angle do not have one morsel of integrity and are unworthy of emulation or even mention in the MSM – they dont even met the minimum benchmark of common decency.
All the man asked was a simple question and you cannot even give him a straight answer. Paradoxically, these are also the same people who frequently expouse to the rest of us what the blogosphere should be and even frequently make it a point to represent themselves as the name and face of blogosphere in the MSM – if you aspire to that status, then may I ask a very simple question, why was so much of the discourse in the thread pertaining to the singapore blogosphere review deleted?
You will have a tough time wriggling your way out of that.
If you have an issue with that please see me in court, I have enough money to sue the pants off all of you 10 times over and this is no idle boast, please kindly take up the challenge, I will do it just for darkness and no one else 10 to 20 times over very gladly.

Thank you for your note. A few things that I want to point out:
1. First of all, I refer Kevin as a prominent video blogger and also social media researcher. As for myself, I did not recall that I call myself an expert on internet research. (we never said that you were as you mentioned “an expert on internet research”, pls refer to our post for further clarification) I think that Loy has offered you the avenues to who the authorities are, for e.g. Tan Tarn How. (Mr Loy offered the afore mentioned information on his own accord pls verify with him and imputed that we sought such clarification which if you care to peruse our post again, we neither requested or sought such information.)
2. The video is done in an ad-hoc manner. (I think this is the ratio decidendi of this entire case, this was what we sought to establish, ‘ad hoc’ so we can more or less dismiss it as the work of amateurs lacking in rigor or for that matter any value except what you Mr Leong mentioned as “fun” – I believe this is what we came here to establish and the matter is settled on that account – we see no reason to pursue this matter any further.) Kevin and I have done this out of interest and fun to educate young bloggers out there who are interested in the subject matter. I did specifically apologize that I may have missed out some bloggers in the after word. Forgetting to mention bloggers just reflects the author’s idiosyncrasies.
3. This video is neither authoritative nor comprehensive to reflect the greater diversity of the blogosphere. Otherwise, the video may be mentioned in academic journals. It may be important to note that there is no one authority in the internet, specifically the blogosphere. This is not a world where there is currently a ruling group or party. Hence I am surprised by why you take this omission so seriously.

He will testify to endorse this as a matter of fact i.e your assumptions are premised on erroneous facts – darkness never made such representations either impliedly or expressly to suggest the brotherhood press is a subsidiary of the IS. If you peruse our articles at the end, there is a caption which states quite clearly it is remains the solely under the purview of the brotherhood press.) under that, I don’t see why I should have made any mention at all. Perhaps the Brotherhood should consider setting your own blog (how do you define a blog Mr Leong? Are we to assume your definition of a blog is premised on a structural criterion? One which is based on the fulfillment of form rather than content and the spirit of intendment of what it is supposed to convey to the general reading public? – What you fail to register is the brotherhood press regularly produces content which is synonymous to what is typically generated by other blogs. There by stating we should set up our “own blog,” you are implying that we are not a blog, that may be true in the structural sense but it fails to recognize the broader and wider paradigm of what blog typically do, that is produce what we regularly produce i.e articles.
That line of logic is flawed as it is base and facile, besides your corseted definition of a blog assumes it to be exhaustive, that is presumptuous as it is unimaginative. On this point we disagree under the strongest possible terms. According to your logic a book ceases to be a book if it posted on line, simply because it lacks the usage of paper? How persuasive is that line of argument when one discounts the content and instead promotes the structural and form as the basis of precedence for qualification? I wonder. For the record, please note the italics section is a reply from the shit council of the brotherhood while the “spammer” you presumably mentioned is none other than Mr Bernard Leong himself. So forgive me, if I am somewhat confused who exactly is the spammer here? Is it the brotherhood or Mr Bernard Leong? And if this post was indeed a spam why was it deemed worthy of reply in the first instance?
So may I respectfully ask where did darkness specifically “beg for acknowledgement.” or “attention” as you suggested?
The issue pertains to a matter of accuracy that incidentally the “review” purports by specifically using the word “research” and “review” even pls refer to the video-casting .
Granted this may not suggest the content belongs to any pedigree higher than an observation , but even then it cannot claim the right not to respond to a critical review – vis-a-vis darkness question. Which till today the SA has not even responded in kind.
The question is simply this: Can any reasonable person conduct a review of even the Intelligent Singaporean and let us just leave out the broader context of the socio-political blogosphere without noticing the Brotherhood Press? Is that possible?
For the record, (this is listed in our internal reader mail /I can even forward the detailed report that runs 7 pages/ their scholars have done a thorough study of the singapore blogosphere following the matter complete with a statistical evaluation) – the brotherhood press produces 4.7 times more than the average blog / frequency runs at a median rate of 3.6 articles per week / number of words exceeds the average blog by a whopping 220% (I dont claim to know precisely what this means except to say, it’s like having a white elephant in your living room and not even noticing it!)
So with the greatest respect who really is the “almighty” here? Who is the one proclaiming “greatest.” The one who chooses not to see, hear or even consider when it’s so patently clear to all of us as to deny the truth? Or is it the BP who simply asked a simple question – and who may I ask is really “begging” the SA, the one who yearns to be understood even denying the adage; realism requires recognition – to the extent of even conducting an open policy of non-engagement and systematic deletion of material deemed to facilitate understanding of the dispute or a man who simply wants to know the truth and nothing but the truth.

So forgive me, if I am somewhat confused who exactly is the spammer here? Is it the brotherhood or Mr Bernard Leong? And if this post was indeed a spam why was it deemed worthy of reply in the first instance?
So may I respectfully ask where did darkness specifically “beg for acknowledgement.” or “attention” as you suggested?
The issue pertains to a matter of accuracy that incidentally the “review” purports by specifically using the word “research” and “review” even pls refer to the video-casting .
Granted this may not suggest the content belongs to any pedigree higher than an observation , but even then it cannot claim the right not to respond to a critical review – vis-a-vis darkness question. Which till today the SA has not even responded in kind.
The question is simply this: Can any reasonable person conduct a review of even the Intelligent Singaporean and let us just leave out the broader context of the socio-political blogosphere without noticing the Brotherhood Press? Is that possible?
For the record, (this is listed in our internal reader mail /I can even forward the detailed report that runs 7 pages/ their scholars have done a thorough study of the singapore blogosphere following the matter complete with a statistical evaluation) – the brotherhood press produces 4.7 times more than the average blog / frequency runs at a median rate of 3.6 articles per week / number of words exceeds the average blog by a whopping 220% (I dont claim to know precisely what this means except to say, it’s like having a white elephant in your living room and not even noticing it!)
So with the greatest respect who really is the “almighty” here? Who is the one proclaiming “greatest.” The one who chooses not to see, hear or even consider when it’s so patently clear to all of us as to deny the truth? Or is it the BP who simply asked a simple question – and who may I ask is really “begging” the SA, the one who yearns to be understood even denying the adage; realism requires recognition – to the extent of even conducting an open policy of non-engagement and systematic deletion of material deemed to facilitate understanding of the dispute or a man who simply wants to know the truth and nothing but the truth.

Let’s get real, we all know, people don’t shred documents or burn books for no apparent reason! They said, they did it because it was ‘spam” – but really I dont think so, they did it for a deliberate purpose so that anyone who enters those links will form the impression darkness is a crazy man who is shouting at a blank wall. In effect, the SA is using the same dirty tactics that features so regularly in the political arena that one party frequently deploys i.e character assasination by subtle implication.

When that strategy failed, they said it was all ‘spam.’ Hence they have a right to delete – Scimmy took them all round the block by the ears by proving otherwise, it certainly wasn’t spam! When that failed, they have now resorted to name calling etc labelling us brotherhood fans etc or people suffering from mass hypnosis or even cultist – whatever their motivation one thing is so very clear from all this:

The threatened him – again he said, I have the right to ask. They axed him. He said again, I have a right to ask the question – then when that failed they crucified him by taking away all the things he lovingly built to create the writing machine – I mean everything SLF etc.
(3) As for Bambi’s stories let us all be so clear so that we do not delude ourselves on this issue, no one can force another to vote with their wallets. He writes terribly well and in rough terms for just hacking away he earns roughly twice as much as a minister – I say good for him! And it’s all tax free with no publishing and retail friction cost.
(4) Do not thing netizens are stupid. You have absolutely no idea how many people read the BP. Neither do you realize, these readers are perhaps the most influential and highest earners in the land. May I remind the SA of this reality.
I do wish him luck with Scimmy, I have always believed, he was just wasting a large part of his life in the virtual. Scimmy will not take his famous sulks, she will put him on the right track and he will listen to her. Yes, I am with Singapore Angle. It might appear odd that I’m allowing the BH people to post so many comments targeting SA, in particular a fellow colleague of mine at SA whom I’m on very good terms with.
However, I don’t think that I should be playing judge on who’s right or who’s wrong. That’s not up to me to decide. If the BH and their fans want to continue, in your words, their “shit”, by all means, go ahead. This blog has a non-censoring principle which I would like to adhere to as much as humanly possible, so I try not to remove comments, unless specifically requested by the author of the comments.
If you want to know what I think about this whole affair, I would just say that knowing when to stop is important. Even if one is truly victimised, the victim will lose support of the majority if he/she doesn’t know when to stop playing that role. Too much of something is never good. I believe that the BH and their fans are not juveniles, so I’m hoping that they will know when to stop. They can continue on for all I care, but whether it will be worth it is something that’s up to them to decide.

After reading all this. I realize it is true, the SA did delete significant sections of the discourse in the thread. I do not want to speculate why, but I have read some of the deleted material, they are neither malicious or spurious. On the contrary, their line of logic appears to be reasonable. I cannot but ask why?
The SA has lost alot of credibility in the eyes of most netizens and on how they have managed this whole issue and I do agree with the above comment of the reader.
SA pls don’t speak on our behalf anymore, I do not either share your values or even beliefs and just in case you mistake me for a brotherhood supporter, I am not.
I am just a man who once blogged, closed down his blog and open it again and closed it again and now I read from time to time.

On the surface and consciously you may not have. But unconsciously and implicitly, from my point of view, you have. There is no point showing hospitality to someone in need just to indirectly tell him not to stay so long. It might not be your intention but the tone of your words implied otherwise. In essence, you are doing the act but not believing in the spirit of that act.
I am not saying this out of ill-will. I have spoken because I see the socio-political blogosphere degenerating into another version of real world politics. I might be wrong, but I view this disdain towards the Brotherhood as something due to their popularity and ideas and how it affects/ distracts from your (group) goals. I can almost guess who is in this group. It quite obvious.
Apologies if I am wrong. But what started out as a potential vehicle to bring change is becoming another version of the MSM.

This is not a dispute between the netizens and the govt of Singapore. It is one that has attracted tremendous attention and gripped almost all in the net because it relates to how netizens propose to resolve disputes amongst themselves. If we cannot even solve problems amongst ourselves how do we aspire to inspire change?
Darkness asked a question. Does he have the right to do so? SA did not respond and instead deleted large sections of the thread relating to the dispute. Do they have a right to do so? How long should darkness pursue this matter bfr public opinion turns against him 7 or 14 or maybe 30 days. Does his right to ask a question relate to the issue of time? If 10 people say darkness it is time to stop and one remains silent, does he still have the right to ask his question? If the SA keeps proclaiming they are the benchmark of rational discourse – do they have a right not to respond to darkness questions? If they well they do, they tell us all why?
You see Aaron, what is clear to me is this, it has finally happened what darkness himself predicted once upon a time, it is written somewhere in a thread in either the IS or icered.com, I cannot remember.

This is my reply to you.
The issue here is not how long it should continue. Even the best of us will agree, how long is a relative term – as it means very different things to different people. If I put chains on you Aaron for 30 days, would it be appropriate for me to expect you to shut up and accept your fate as a slave by the 31st day? So what you are effectively saying if your neighbors and friends grow tire of your whining by the 40th day – you should simply accept your fate? Is this what you define as rational discourse?
Since when was time ever a decider of rights? If what you advocate is true, it would be still valid to still post signs like no dogs and Chinese in parks in Shanghai and all homosexuals should be packed off to concentration camps – I believe you place too much emphasis on the popularity factor and fail to recognize this is exclusively a matter of principle. If what you say is true then the majority must win, but if that is the case why then did the constitutionalist see fit to preserve specific rights like the freedom to religion, speech along with the right to vote which cannot be even overruled by the forces of the majority? –because there are seen as fundamental principles to be preserved even against the forces of the majority.
That is how rational people make sense of the world – the issue here is whether the brotherhood had a valid case to ask the question? The issue here is whether darkness had a right to ask the question which even their own Council believed he did not, because according to them, it has been settled, but to me as an observer, the Council was just engaging in one giant wayang show – that was why darkness continued to insist on his right to ask the question even when he was threatened on three separate occasions by the council and on the fourth occasion they even invoked charter 15 which is the equivalent of their ISA. Yet he and the others including the char bor Aurora continued to insist he had a right to ask the question.
You don’t have to be a political scientist or even someone with a Phd to know what is happening here – you don’t even need to have a degree to understand what is happening here – neither do you need to be someone who even has one page of knowledge in political science to understand the issue – it is simply this how far are you prepared to go for your beliefs in principles?
What pains me no end about this issue is this – this is not a matter of citizen against state this time i.e MICA vs Mr Brown – it is a matter of netizens resolving their disputes with other netizens BH vs SA – the SA claims time and again to subscribe to rational discourse, a question was asked – how did the SA respond? By gutting out large chunks of the discourse in their thread which they conveniently term as ‘spam’ – what saddens me is this, no one really knows what charter 15 means outside the brotherhood, fyi it is nothing short of banishment i.e they consider him a threat to their economic interest and security. It means everything darkness has worked so hard along with his crew to create their machine writing will be systematically dismantled and eradicated forever – yet despite this, darkness and the every single one of them considered it worthwhile. This must surely be either madness or martyrdom or maybe we will never even know why.
It’s finished. I wanted to let the matter just die down bc it is finished after all an end of an age!Over, but you ppl as I can see are still taking pot shots at Bambi. btw they cant kill this SLF it belongs to ‘the lady of the lake’ the riches benefactor of the b’hood.

I will gladly take your word for it, that there is no hidden agenda on your part. As for SA, honestly, it’ll be difficult. Not that they want or need to convince me.
But what TT, Darkness (predicted) and Dr Lee said were my exact sentiments. It is very sad to be fighting against each other instead of working together to effect change.

I am impressed that Bernard came up with that vodcast, showed his face and could be counted upon. And he had the guts to indicate – that the decision to delete comments were his alone, not SA. That really takes Guts, something that is lacking in many gutless and faceless creatures. Me included.
I would like to show my appreciation to Inspir3d for IS, and also to SA writers for sharing their views and articles. Let us continue to work together to effect change.
Thanks to PM Lee, I have been reading the obituaries page on a daily basis, noting the age of those departing. Mr Brown was right : The house always wins!

I really do not believe you have an idea what is the typical vocational profile of a brotherhood reader – I happen to be a counsel who deals in a very specific area of conflict management. FYI what he has done by i.e to delete comment and to represent that he had the right to do so is nothing short of an attempt to violate the right concerning reasonable notification.
I am sorry, I disagree. I do not see any guts here except chicken entrails. All I see is a man who (BL) is prepared to do anything to win his case even if it means contorting and perverting the truth at the expense of representing Bambi as a deranged man.
Bambi’s 2003 prediction to Agnes was spot on – man will never learn from his mistakes.

Dear Sir & Readers,
I have taken the liberty of speaking directly to the richest read club of the b’hood press run by the lady of the lake.
Who incidentally was bambi bad boys original benefactor, this is really the stuff of B movies. Many years ago when Bambi first started,he was retrenched as an engineer, poor and probably just just hacking away in a rented room surviving on instant noodles and cornflakes.
But his love novels were appealing in a sappy toe curling sort of way lah and it did have quite a following.
One day, when Bambi lamented, he may have to stop because he had to work as a shift supervisor. According to his employers, he was over qualified! This was during the recession.
He received an anon sum of money from a secret admirer, a certain mysterious benefactor who went by the moniker of the lady of the lake, a Thai Chinese tycoon’s daughter who provisioned him quite nicely cars nice clothes etc with simply the words,
“write for me.”
This was long even before the brotherhood started in late 2001 when the brotherhood didn’t even exist – when Bambi first wrote the confessions of the Singaporean Gangster.
Since then the original provision was managed by Couts in the UK and through the years it grew into a considerable investment when the brotherhood started. I believe every $1 invested became $8,400 odd in real terms value, higher than even Boeing shares and although most of it is e-currency, its still money – today the lady of the lake is the largest equity investor in the b’hood, she has the largest portfolio of stocks and even a dedicated row referred too as the “yellow row” to signify her status as royalty and is the only woman to sit in the great hall! This is no mean feat OK, as women as strictly not allowed, but again money has a way doesn’t it of seeking compromises.
I have spoken personally to her for nearly 3 hours over the phone and she is indeed livid! She will be visiting Singapore soon for her regular shopping trip and I have arranged for Bambi to chaperone her around.
He is most persuasive as he tags along carrying all her bags and nick nacks. Yes, he can be such a delightful toy poodle, you have no idea, pulling chairs out, opening doors, rushing here and there that just adds up to make a lady feel like a billion dollars.
If you dont believe please go and ask Inspir3d, the administrator of the IS, he is truly a smoothie when it comes to the art of persuasion and I will not even be surprise if we shall even see a sudden and unexpected retraction from the council of the hole in the head very soon.
