If the someone you reference in statement X does take offense, he can successfully sue you because the intent is clearly present. To cite hypothetical examples, saying that Tan Ah Kow and Yang Meh Meh are cowards could be defamatory, but saying that all economists are stupid isn't. OTOH it is possible to defame an entity: "all lawyers are corrupt" is not defamatory (althought clearly logically suspect) but saying "all lawyers in the Society of Singapore Lawyers are corrupt" could very well be.
