Just a short one here (no time =( )

Think the issue for me would be that the gov seems to be unwilling, or too slow, to take up the next step. Have to give them credit for developing us from 3rd to 1st world in 30+ years, but surely now the next step must be democratization, free speech, income equality etc.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/16/world/asia/16iht-spore.html?_r=1

Here's a bunch of bullcrap of Singapore spending the last 30 years building the "ideal citizen" that doesn't spit and litter and how Singapore's kindness movement is a cultural success.....No one knows how much fear is driven into all these "campaigns."

Right, Singaporeans don't spit? Singaporean's don't litter? Give me a break. I have seen my fair share of spit and litter everywhere. We do have a tip top cleaning crew that is paid little to nothing to do the dirty job.

Yes, we did have COURTEOUS campaigns like Mr Lion but does it really mean Singaporeans are all courteous and kind? I think there's a bunch of snobs in the air right now in Singapore more than before.

Forgive my rant...but this is such a big lie of Singapore being a kind city, yes, kind to tourists but definitely NOT to Singaporeans.

The article says Taxi Drivers are a good barometer of national discourse... and the driver said that these campaigns work(?) because the law makes people kind? So fear makes people kind? We need laws to make people kind? Come on....

My friend's dad died in TTSH following a minor heart attack and had to wait at ER for more than 20 hours after trying to admit himself and telling the staff he is having a heart attack. Kindness?

Old seniors having to collect cardboards for survival, is that kindness?

I can give many more examples but I don't want to discredit those who are actually kind. I have came across kind people but in no way is Singapore's Kindness Standard a success.

I think all of this discussion is ten truckloads of awesome. I grew up in an average family, and went to average schools (Hua Yi SS and then NP). And very often I don't know how my peers take what's being placed on their plates. If you're philosophically blunt, or otherwise don't like to think very much, Singapore suits you to the "T". You are told what to do and say, you get 3 meals a day, don't ever question and you can come out to play.

I think one VERY important aspect to this discussion has not been mentioned. Many MANY friends advise that whatever choice I may make, I should not give up my citizenship, because if whatever I plan fail, I can still come back to Singapore and be guaranteed a job, and a decent life. I trust half of Singapore thinks this way.

I think, if you're gonna dive, then give it all you got. Your (unborn) children deserve better, even if you think you don't.

That said, I'm trying very hard to break free myself. I'm 20 and not at all rich. Can anyone advise on how best to emigrate? Currently I'm thinking of studying abroad for my Bachelor's and stay on.

Interesting exchange of positive and negative persuasions from different perspectives between Online New Citizen and Aaron. Very amusing indeed!

However, I am still inclined to agree with Aaron :)

One word: LEAVE!

I went to college in Texas, got told to come home cos mom thought it was best. She is now regretting it and frankly, even though I do not blame her, I'd wish she was more opened minded then.

Now i am struggling to get my PR for the land of Oz and because of the economy, they have basically closed the door. What could have been a 15 month wait is now a 3 year wait.

I regretted my decision for coming back since day one. And most of the friends I had in college who are from here.... they either never came back or left after coming back for a few years.

When you have a taste of what real living is, you will realize that this is not even half life you have here.

Leaving Singapore is so difficult.

I signed up for a 2 yrs masters program in Down Under just to get outta here land myself there, and it starts in a month's time.

Just thinking of the money to be spent (AUD $52K for tuition alone) is enough to make me wanna back out.

I wished I had a time-travel machine just like that one in Back to the Future, just so I can show my wife what we would turn out to be if we stay on here.
I wished she could see the long term gains from leaving Singapore's life behind to start a new one...

Hi Aaron,

I have AU PR and have been sitting on it for the last 2 and a half years. Have finally decided to move there at the end of this year. The comments made about Singapore are all true. I am doing it for the sake of everyone in my family. You should too while you still can. I wish I hadgone earlier.

Been in Canada for 8 yrs. My whole family is in Singapore. And loving the way Canada is, including the lovely weather.

The only challenge is to convince my brain-washed parents to even visit me in Canada.

It's about time everyone knows that Singapore is a "Communist" country.

I will urge others to leave. Come to Vancouver. No lack of "local flavours" and atmosphere. You get better weather and social care. so what if Canadians pay more taxes.

At least I don't have to worry if I will die in the hospital because of lack of money. That happened to my sister's father in law. Operation in Singapore cost $25Gs. Can't afford it and father in law sacrificed his life instead of getting treatment that might have save his life.

Seriously, I worry for the old folks in Singapore. The system will and is killing them slowly.

Kudos to Lee Family for making Singapore a "democratic" country and sucking the shitz out of everyone.

If you can't fight them, just leave them. There is always better things to do than to sit and contemplate why you should leave Singapore. The reasons are pretty obvious, and I don't think there is a need to contemplate any further.
